The material in this series concerns human service programs in which Governors Guy Hunt and George C. Wallace participated. The records in the first two boxes pertain to various drug awareness programs throughout the state. The programs include the Governor's Conference on Drug Awareness, the Mobile Bay Area Partnership for Youth, and Just Say No. Types of material include correspondence, brochures, posters, reports, and photographs. Federal agencies represented in the records include the Department of Education and the Justice Department. The series contains correspondence from Edwin Meese III and reports by William Bennett. In addition, both men spoke at various antidrug conferences in Alabama. A photograph of and contract for Marva Collins of Chicago's Westside Preparatory School is also in the series. The participation of Lucky & Forney Inc. Advertising, a Birmingham firm, in the drug awareness progarm is also documented. The series also contains general information in regard to health and safety programs. Subjects include AIDS, birth control, drug abuse, childhood diseases, smoking, stress, health care for the elderly, and many other public health concerns. The records consist of correspondence, brochures, reports, newspaper clippings, newsletters, and other related items.
